Con Dao has a different atmosphere from Vietnam’s larger resort islands.

The main roads are rarely crowded, mountains rise close behind the coastline, and long stretches of sea can feel remarkably quiet. Con Son Town is small enough to explore easily, while beaches, forest trails and viewpoints begin only a short distance away.

Nature is a large part of the experience. Much of the archipelago lies within Con Dao National Park, protecting forest, coral reefs, seagrass beds and important marine habitats. Boat trips can lead to smaller islands for swimming and snorkeling, while walks through the national park offer another perspective on the landscape.

Yet Con Dao also carries a difficult history.

For more than a century, the islands were used as a prison under French colonial rule and later by the South Vietnamese government. Former prison buildings, historic cells and Hang Duong Cemetery remain important places of remembrance. Visiting them gives Con Dao a depth that is unusual for a beach destination.

The contrast is striking. A morning may be spent learning about the island’s past, followed by an afternoon beside a nearly empty beach or looking across the sea from a quiet coastal road.

Understanding Con Dao’s History

Con Dao’s history is an essential part of understanding the island today.

The first prison was established during French colonial rule in the nineteenth century, and the islands continued to be used for political prisoners through different periods of Vietnam’s modern history.

Thousands of prisoners were held here under extremely harsh conditions.

Con Dao Prison Sites

Several former prison compounds remain open to visitors.

Cells, courtyards and preserved structures provide an insight into the conditions experienced by prisoners and the role Con Dao played during more than a century of political conflict.

The Tiger Cages

The areas commonly known as the Tiger Cages are among the most confronting parts of Con Dao’s prison history.

Beaches of Con Dao

Con Dao’s beaches are one of the main reasons to spend several days here.

An Hai Beach

Close to Con Son Town, An Hai is easy to reach and offers a long stretch of coast backed by hills.

Its location makes it convenient for an early morning walk or swim.

Dam Trau Beach

Dam Trau is one of Con Dao’s best known beaches, with a sheltered setting and forest behind the sand.

It works well as part of a relaxed day exploring the northern part of the island.

Quieter Coastal Areas

Other beaches and coves are scattered around Con Son and the surrounding islands.

Conditions vary according to season, tides and wind, so rather than promising one particular beach, we prefer to choose according to conditions during your stay.

 

Con Dao National Park

Con Dao National Park protects much of the archipelago’s land and surrounding marine environment.

Forest covers large areas of Con Son, while offshore habitats include coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Walking routes vary in length and difficulty. Some lead through forest towards beaches or viewpoints, while others require more time and physical effort.

For travelers who prefer a lighter day, nature can still be enjoyed through short walks, coastal drives and boat trips.

The national park is also closely involved in conservation work, particularly the protection of sea turtle nesting areas.

 

Sea Turtles and Conservation

Con Dao is one of Vietnam’s most important nesting areas for sea turtles.

During the nesting season, female turtles come ashore on protected beaches to lay their eggs. Conservation teams monitor nesting areas, protect eggs and support the release of hatchlings when conditions are appropriate.

These are conservation activities, not performances, so sightings and releases should never be treated as guaranteed experiences.

Access to nesting areas can also be controlled, and timing depends on season, weather and conservation requirements.

When a suitable program is available, we favor properly managed experiences that place the protection of the turtles ahead of the visitor experience.

 

Exploring Con Dao by Boat

A boat journey reveals a side of Con Dao that cannot be experienced from the main island alone.

Smaller islands lie across the archipelago, with opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and time on quieter beaches.

Sea conditions play an important role. Visibility, currents and wind can vary considerably, so routes may need to change from one day to another.

We generally prefer a private or small scale boat experience with fewer stops and more time in suitable locations rather than trying to visit several islands quickly.

For couples and families, this also allows the pace to be adjusted according to how much time everyone wants to spend in the water.

 

The Flavors of Con Dao

Seafood naturally plays an important role in eating on the island.

Fresh fish, squid, crab and shellfish are widely available, often prepared simply with Vietnamese herbs, chili, lime or grilled over charcoal.

The island also has a number of local products and dishes associated with its coastal environment.

Dining choices are more limited than in Phu Quoc, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, which is part of the reality of travelling somewhere smaller and more remote.

For us, Con Dao is less about seeking out a long list of famous dishes and more about good fresh seafood, simple local restaurants and relaxed meals close to the sea.

 

Best Time to Visit Con Dao

Con Dao can be visited throughout the year, although sea conditions and rainfall vary by season.

March to June is often a particularly attractive period for warm weather, beach time and marine activities.

July to September can remain suitable for travel, although tropical rain becomes more frequent.

October to February may bring stronger winds and rougher seas at times, which can affect boat trips, swimming and snorkeling.

The different sides of the island can experience different sea conditions depending on the season, so having some flexibility during the stay is useful.

Travelers particularly interested in sea turtles should also consider the nesting season, although wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed.

 

How Long to Stay in Con Dao

For most travelers, we recommend three to four nights.

This allows time for the history of the island, a boat or nature experience and at least one completely free day.

Four to five nights is particularly suitable for couples and travelers who have chosen Con Dao specifically for a quiet beach stay.

Staying longer also provides useful flexibility if sea conditions affect a planned boat trip.

We generally do not recommend travelling to Con Dao for only one or two nights. Part of the appeal of coming this far is having enough time to slow down once you arrive.

 

Where to Stay

Accommodation on Con Dao is more limited than on Vietnam’s larger beach islands.

Con Son Town

Staying close to town gives easy access to local restaurants, historical sites and the waterfront.

It is convenient for travelers who want to explore independently and spend more time outside their hotel.

Beach Resorts

Selected resorts outside the center provide more privacy, direct access to the coast and a greater sense of escape.

These are particularly well suited to couples, honeymooners and travelers looking for a quiet luxury stay.

Properties set closer to forest and less developed stretches of coastline allow the natural setting to become a larger part of the experience.
