Overview
Formerly known as Tbeng Meanchey, Preah Vihear is a tranquil provincial capital and an ideal stopover for travelers en route to significant archaeological and historical sites such as Koh Ker, Preah Khan, and Prasat Preah Vihear. The region, rich in dense forests and remote landscapes, remains one of Cambodia’s least populated provinces. It is also a gateway to some of the Kingdom’s most culturally and historically significant temples, many of which are nestled close to the border with Thailand.
Climate
Preah Vihear enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, with distinct seasonal variations:
- Cool Season (Nov–Mar): 22°C to 28°C, ideal for travel.
- Hot Season (Mar–May): 27°C to 35°C, very warm.
- Rainy Season (May–Oct): 24°C to 32°C, high humidity and rainfall. The average annual temperature hovers around 27°C, with December and January offering the most pleasant conditions.

The province covers approximately 13,788 km², bordered by:
- South: Kampong Thom
- West: Siem Reap and Oddar Meanchey
- East: Stueng Treng
- North: Laos and Thailand The terrain is a mix of forested highlands, dense jungle, and mountainous backdrops like the Dangkrek Mountains.

- From Phnom Penh: Daily buses are available.
- From Siem Reap: About 200 km away; minibuses or shared taxis are common.
